For the sixth year running, we are designing the poster for the Cannes International Film Festival.

This year, we have decided to pay tribute to two heroic rebels. Thirty-five years after the world premiere of Ridley Scott’s film on 20 May 1991 in Cannes, Thelma and Louise return to the poster. These two fighters turned the tables and shattered gender stereotypes – both societal and cinematic; they embody absolute freedom and unwavering friendship. Themes that were particularly avant-garde in 1991 and still resonate strongly today. To embody them, we have chosen this black-and-white photograph that celebrates life and the timeless struggles for the freedom to be oneself.
The two protagonists of cinema’s first female-led and feminist road movie took the plunge, carried by a wind of freedom blowing at their backs. They have become immortal icons. Today, they face us. And reflect on their legacy.
